What is Neuro Linguistic Programming?
NLP explores the relationships between the way we experience the world through our senses (Neuro), the way we interpret that experience (Linguistic) and our strategies (Programming). These relationships help us understand why one person’s model of the world is completely different to anybody else’s.
The field of NLP was born out of work conducted by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the 1970s. The goal of their research was to understand why certain people achieved great results and then to create models to install this excellence in others. Bandler and Grinder’s studies initially focused on renowned therapists of the time; people like Milton Eriksson, Fritz Perls and Virginia Satir. Over the last three decades, countless others have contributed to the further development of NLP.
We have strategies for everything we do; whether it’s for getting up in the morning, brushing our teeth, driving the car, or falling in (or out of) love, everything we do is driven by strategies – and often we are not even aware of the strategy we are using. If the strategies we use work for us, that’s fantastic. If they don’t then we can become really unhappy, or even self-sabotage. Does that sound familiar?
It is important to understand that NLP is NOT a magic formula; it is a framework of techniques, underpinned by a series of guiding principles and attitudes. The focus of NLP is to do what works for you. If something isn’t working well for you then wouldn’t it be great if you could understand how to make a change for the better?
Once we understand what affects our current behaviours, we are able to understand what we need to change to modify these behaviours into ones that are more helpful to us in achieving our goals.
